Proton is gearing up for a key event. On 4 October 2025 at 8:00 PM, the company will livestream the official launch and open bookings for its new eMAS 5 compact EV via Facebook and TikTok at @protonemasofficial.
The eMAS 5 which is the smaller sibling to the existing Proton eMAS 7 is billed as “Malaysia’s first affordable EV,” targeting urban drivers and first-time electric car buyers. Rather than positioning it as a premium niche car, Proton seems ready to play volume by pushing price competitiveness, practicality, and day-to-day usability.
What We Know So Far
Based on insider info and media reports, the eMAS 5 will share its platform with Geely’s Xingyuan model. It’s expected to offer two battery options (around 30 kWh and 40 kWh) and deliver a WLTP-rated range in the 250–325 km bracket. Proton has also showed that the model will include features like a 14.6-inch touchscreen display and a bilingual infotainment system to suit local tastes.
Proton is already running a “MISI 5” roadshow, bringing the car to public spaces to let people see and touch it ahead of launch. The campaign leans into the idea that buyers should test the product to build confidence.
Rumoured Price Range
While Proton hasn’t published official pricing yet, market whispers suggest a very aggressive number. Some industry watchers believe Proton may price initial imported units below RM 100,000 to gain traction. Others conjecture that the Premium variant could start near RM 80,000 to RM 85,000, making it the first EV in Malaysia under RM 90,000.
If this pricing holds, it changes the game for Malaysian EVs by lowering the entry barrier for buyers.
Why This Launch Matters
For Proton, the eMAS 5 is more than a new model. It’s a bridge to the mass EV market. It will likely influence the direction of Proton’s charging network strategy, aftersales service model, and future EV releases.
For buyers, it offers a new option that might combine everyday usability, low running cost, and a more accessible price tag.
